LEADERSHIP THAT LISTENS

Mike Gentile is a lifelong Utica resident, educator, community leader, and dedicated public servant with a long record of giving back to the community he calls home.

Mike was raised in a close-knit and loving family by his parents, Frank and Sarah Gentile, alongside his siblings. He lost his mother at a young age, an experience that had a profound impact on his life and gave him an early understanding of the importance of family, community, and being there for others. Mike remembers his mother for her caring heart and her desire to make sure the people around her were taken care of. Along with his father, she instilled in Mike the importance of treating everyone with respect, giving back to the community, and always being honest. Those lessons have stayed with him throughout his life and are a driving force behind his desire to serve others and give back to the community that has given so much to him.

Mike previously served as an Oneida County Legislator and as Chief of Staff for the City of Utica, giving him firsthand experience in both city and county government. In those roles, he worked closely with elected officials, department heads, community organizations, law enforcement, first responders, businesses, and residents to address everyday challenges, improve government operations, and help move important community initiatives forward.

Before entering government, Mike built his career in education and human services. His experience as an educator allowed him to work with students of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds, while his work in human services focused on supporting individuals with disabilities and helping them achieve greater independence and opportunity. Throughout these roles, Mike gained valuable experience in education, behavioral supports, workforce development, and individualized services. Most importantly, they reinforced his belief that every person has value, deserves to be heard, and should have the opportunity and support needed to succeed.

Mike earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Politics from SUNY Potsdam, where he also studied music education. He is currently working toward the completion of his Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Leadership, continuing to build upon his professional experience and commitment to effective leadership. His combination of education, human services, government, and community leadership has allowed him to see the challenges facing the region from many different perspectives.

Community service has always been central to Mike’s life. He serves as the New York District 10 Little League District Administrator, overseeing Little League programs throughout the region, and organizes the local Challenger Baseball program for individuals with disabilities. His commitment to Little League has extended beyond the local level, including service on Little League International’s Advisory Board. Mike has also remained involved with numerous community organizations and initiatives throughout the Mohawk Valley.

Whether in the classroom, working with individuals with disabilities, serving in local government, volunteering in the community, or spending countless hours on a Little League field, Mike has built his life around working directly with people and strengthening the community around him.

For Mike, leadership is not about a title. It is about being present, listening to people, understanding the challenges they face, and doing the work necessary to make a difference. Throughout every role he has held, Mike has worked to bring people together, find solutions, and follow through on the commitments he makes. It is the approach that has guided his career in public and community service and continues to guide him every day: Show Up. Listen. Deliver.
